Can My Medical Practice Treat All the Members of My Family?

When you’re tending to the health and well-being of multiple family members, including yourself, finding the right providers can make an invaluable difference.

Rather than finding a doctor for each member of your household, the right medical practice can serve as your health care home base — saving time and hassle while bolstering your family’s overall wellness.

Our qualified experts at Sellwood Medical Clinic, with four locations in the metro Portland area, provide family medical care for patients of all ages. We also offer specialized gynecology and pediatric care.

Take a few moments to learn more, including ways our team can support your family’s wellness.

Doctors who treat all family members

While valuable, a medical degree doesn’t necessarily make someone equipped to care for your whole family. In fact, there are several hundred specialties and subspecialties among physicians and medical practices.

If you’re seeking general or preventive care, you may benefit most from an internal medicine or family physician. For your child’s care, a pediatric-specializing doctor is key.

For diagnostics, preventive care, and many diagnoses and treatments for you and your loved ones, you may fare best with a family medicine doctor, also known as a family or primary care physician.

Unlike other general medicine physicians, such as internal medicine providers who primarily treat adults, family medical practices have the unique expertise and training needed to provide a broad range of care for patients of all ages.

What family doctors and pediatricians provide

Family physicians and pediatricians provide preventive services, such as physicals and immunizations, to help keep you and your loved ones healthy. They also tend to sicknesses like flu bugs and ear infections and common injuries like cuts, sprains, and some fractures.

At Sellwood Medical Clinic, our specialists also offer:

By maintaining your family’s medical records all in one place, we help ensure things like healthy childhood development, effective diagnostics, and customized treatments.

You and your loved ones can rest easy knowing you’ll receive quality care during times of health and sickness.

When to schedule your family’s exams

Whenever you have a health-related question or concern, feel free to contact our office. Common reasons to schedule a checkup include an infant with a fever of 100.4°F or higher, an adult fever over 103°F, unusual or long-lasting physical pain, and obvious injuries.

You and your loved ones should come in for annual physicals too. We recommend these comprehensive exams once a year from three years of age up. Babies and toddlers typically need more frequent visits.

Seek immediate care for potentially serious symptoms, such as breathing difficulties, confusion, severe chest pain, or fainting.
