What Happens During an Expecting Parents Meet and Greet?

What Happens During an Expecting Parents Meet and Greet?

The months leading up to your child’s birth can be one of the most exciting times of your life. It’s also very natural to experience concerns or anxiety. Meeting with your medical providers before your little one arrives can help ease those concerns and build familiarity.

Our pediatric team at Sellwood Medical Clinic, with four locations in the metro Portland area, offers expecting parents meet and greets to get your newborn’s care started on a positive track.

Here’s a closer look at these visits, including what to expect during your session and how to best prepare.

When to schedule your meet and greet

Also known as a newborn meet and greet, we recommend scheduling your in-person visit around the start of your last pregnancy trimester. By meeting with your providers several months before the birth of your baby, you can rest easier during those final weeks.

To ensure a productive experience, you may want to choose a time of day when you tend to have the most energy versus a typical nap or rest time. If you’re co-parenting with a partner, schedule your meet and greet when you’re both able to attend. And of course, you can reschedule if needed.

What happens at your meet and greet

At your expecting parents meet and greet, we introduce ourselves and explore any questions you have. We also discuss your upcoming appointment schedule and what to do if an emergency unfolds.

This appointment is basically a conversation, so there’s no need to feel pressure or stress. Think of it as a casual, “getting to know you” opportunity with compassionate professionals who’ll be a valuable part of your journey with your newborn. Many expecting parents find the experience lighthearted and fun.

Preparing for your meet and greet

Before your meet and greet, jot down any questions you’d like to ask. You can ask about breastfeeding, nutrition, sleep, or immunizations, for example.

While you can always ask follow-up questions later — it may even be easier once you’re acquainted with your care team — having a question or two in mind can help you get the most out of your visit.

Before your meet and greet, we recommend contacting your insurance company to make sure you understand what’s covered. It’s always best to avoid last-minute surprises.
