Same-Day Appointment vs. Telehealth Visit: Which Is Best for My Sick Child?

School-age kids often catch 5-6 “bugs” per year. In the same timeframe, toddlers, especially those in daycare, can easily develop over 10 colds.

While common illnesses are a normal part of childhood, that doesn’t make them easier. And when your little one is sick, nothing matters more than getting them effective care quickly.

Our medical team at Sellwood Medical Clinic, with four locations in the metro Portland area, offers same-day appointments and telehealth visits to diagnose, assess, and treat a range of children’s conditions.

Here’s a closer look at these appointment styles to help you determine your best option.

How same-day appointments work

Same-day appointments bring the promptness of urgent care with the added benefits of seeing your child’s primary care team — professionals who already know your child’s history and needs well.

Helpful for most any non-emergency health issue, our team offers same-day visits for common ailments, such as:

At your appointment, your provider will take your child’s vitals, discuss their symptoms and medical history, and perform any needed physical exam or testing.

How telehealth visits work

Telehealth visits offer the convenience of not having to leave your home or office to tend to your child’s medical needs. And like our same-day appointments, they include the familiarity and expertise of your primary care team.

Performed via your phone, tablet, or computer, the virtual visits allow our team to detect, diagnose, and treat various conditions.

Based on a verbal and visual assessment, your provider can also determine whether an in-person exam or test is in order.

Which to choose: same-day or telehealth

If you’re able to come into our clinic with ease and prefer in-person guidance, you may want to choose a same-day appointment. This appointment style also makes more sense if your child may need a strep test, urinalysis, or bloodwork.

If you have other kids at home, a hectic schedule, or transportation issues, telehealth may suit you best. Telehealth also works well for patients with weak immune systems, especially when contagious infections run rampant. (Otherwise, quality masks can protect you during in-person care.)

Your provider can prescribe needed medication at either type of appointment, as well as offer dependable guidance and answers to your questions.
